What is a PACU RN?

Are you an experienced RN with a passion for providing specialized care to patients recovering from anesthesia? As a PACU RN (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit), you will have the opportunity to work in various healthcare settings, delivering comprehensive post-operative care and monitoring to patients after surgery. This role requires an RN who is knowledgeable in post-anesthesia recovery, has excellent assessment skills, and can ensure patient comfort and safety during the critical post-operative period.

To be considered for this position, you must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as an RN, hold an active RN license in good standing, and possess certifications such as BLS and ACLS. Additionally, experience in PACU nursing and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification for those working in pediatric settings are highly desired.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Assessing patients’ conditions and monitoring their vital signs and overall recovery status
  • Managing post-operative pain and administering pain medications as prescribed
  • Monitoring and documenting patients’ responses to anesthesia and surgical procedures
  • Assessing and managing potential complications or adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Collaborating with the surgical team and anesthesiologist to develop appropriate care plans
  • Providing education and emotional support to patients and their families
  • Ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff in the PACU
  • Documenting patient information accurately and maintaining medical records
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives and adhering to best practices.

Common PACU RN Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring patients in the immediate post-operative period
  • Assessing and managing post-operative pain and nausea
  • Assessing and managing potential complications or adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Monitoring and stabilizing patients’ vital signs and oxygenation
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams for optimal patient outcomes.
