Optical illusions….
While the map again presents a lot of red dots signaling a decrease in rates, the data again has some hidden highlights. For instance, we’re seeing a large volume of orders coming out with some lower rates that are diluting the averages and hiding the true story. In September, we saw the larger health systems leading an increase in billing rates whereas we also saw corporate policies and budgeting start to influence things. The larger story is that there are absolutely high paying assignments out there, but it makes a difference who is managing the staffing. For instance, AMN’s leading programs have had very nice bill rates over the past month, whereas some of the other players (ahem…with a reputation for cost cutting) have tried to play some games with rates in the middle of contracts or on new starts.
