Traveling with Phoenix

Join the Flock

Whether you’re an experienced traveler, or thinking about traveling for the first time, it helps to have someone who knows what they’re doing. We exclusively focus on a few areas because that’s the only way to stay on top of things. There are so many nuances to each unit - physician quirks, team structures, call schedules, charting systems – that it requires 100% engagement to make sure the little things get done right. And when the little things get done right, that’s when Life becomes easy for everyone.

There are two things to think about when considering a travel career – where do you want to go? Where do you want to surf…blah blah. But what about the other questions? The harder questions? What happens if I drop into a lab with a crazy mean doc? What if I don’t have any experience with a Bi-plane or an Acist? I’m just out of my onboarding and am scheduled for 8 straight days of call without Pyxis access? I got to my cath lab assignment and it’s 75% IR cases - what do I do? Does my agency have my back? We are under extenuating circumstances and we're here to do our part. Phoenix is providing enhanced guarantees to help bridge the gap between hospital contract and your peace of mind. If you’ve worked with us before, you know we’re generous and like to help – now is no different. We will throw in extra hours here and there to supplement paychecks for people where we see hotspot issues. We will be there for you in your time of need.

Time to update your resume? We can help! We've designed a resume building tool for the entire staffing community (travelers, recruiters, staff employees) to make the daunting task of updating your resume a little easier. With the growth of MSP/VMS companies, details on resumes (like time gaps between assignments) matter, and can actually mean the difference between getting the assignment you want, or losing to the competition. After all, the name of the game is to get your resume into the manager’s hands as fast as possible!

CATH LAB

Phoenix staffs all clinicians in the cardiac cath lab, IR and EP labs — RN, RT, RCIS, RCES and CVT. Because these areas are so highly specialized, cath lab travelers can come from all types of backgrounds. Combined with different state regulations around the roles in a cath lab, it can be helpful to look at common procedures and roles in the lab to determine the right experience.

Common procedures in the cath lab include Right and Left Heart Caths, stents, insertion of pacemakers / Bi-Vs, electrophysiology studies and ablations, closure devices (such as the Watchman), Rotorbladers and more. Technologists applying for cath lab assignments should be proficient in scrubbing these procedures and RNs should be proficient circulating and monitoring.

Cardiac cath lab assignments are not for the faint of heart (no pun intended). There are potentially on call responsibilities, overtime for late cases and stressful environments — after all, it is a life and death situation. Rest assured that Phoenix will work with you to answer all your questions (even the ones we’ll ask for you!) to make sure there are no surprises.

IMAGING

Oftentimes, some of our staffing partners come across hard to fill imaging modalities such as Echo, MRI, CT or Ultrasound. While we don’t search out these opportunities, we’d be shirking our responsibility as a staffing partner if we didn’t try to help with the harder to fill positions — after all, that’s what sets us apart. Many times the best imaging technologists come from referrals from the cath lab world, so we often ask our extensive network for referrals.

Frequently asked questions...

What happens if I need to go into 14 day quarantine due to COVID-19?

Should any 14 day intubation be required from a patient-focused event, Phoenix pays in full as if you had a full 40 hour paycheck (or 36 if you’re working 12’s) – stipend, taxable pay, 401k match, absolutely no different than any other 40 hour paycheck from us during normal times. Phoenix will work with facility personnel (such as employee health or the unit manager) and employees will be required to give a detailed list of “close contacts” that occurred within the last 14 days and cooperate with all local, state and federal health officials.

What happens if my lab stops elective cases / I get flexed?

We are under extenuating circumstances and there will be canceled contracts somewhere. It's not right, period - but it's going to happen. As a facilitator during this time of need, Phoenix is going to be flexible to help ease minds and let you truly focus on the patient care that is so desperately needed. Phoenix is providing enhanced guarantees to help bridge the gap between hospital contract and your peace of mind.

We’re extremely flexible and adapt quickly. We make decisions quickly as a company. The best way for us to make informed decisions is to hear what’s happening on the ground. So please keep us informed of developments so that we can spot the trends and relay them back to the team, as well as update our policies to provide more help to those in particularly challenging circumstances.

Some flex policies are worse than others, and Phoenix is there to support our employees that have more flexes built in the contract (the worst terms are one cancellation per two week period, for reference). If you’ve worked with us for a while, you know we’re generous and like to help – now is no different. We are prepared to go to minimal profit levels (need to keep the lights on and stuff) during this challenging time to provide more security and enhanced guarantees for our workers. We will throw in extra hours here and there to supplement paychecks for people where we see hotspot issues. We will be there for you in your time of need.

What happens if my contract gets cut short?

It’s awful, but it has happened and there are a lot of reasons why. It could be a natural disaster (the California Camp fire burned down one of our client facilities Adventist Feather River), the lab equipment may break, the doctor bringing all the volume gets in a disagreement and takes his cases elsewhere.

When a contract gets cut short, we snap into action. First, we ask for a 30 day notice so nobody is blindsided without a paycheck. Then, we’ll look for a new assignment in the same area so housing can stay the same. If that’s not possible, we’ll find something new and bend over backwards to make the transition as easy as possible.

Will I earn PTO?

Yep! Starting on your very first check you’ll see a PTO accrual and balance. We don’t have any waiting period before you can use it. PTO requests are simple and done though our ADP Payroll app.

How does housing work?

Housing is simple. Phoenix reimburses you for your travel / housing expenses while you’re on assignment according to the daily amounts posted on the GSA website (what the IRS uses - IRS is ewwww!). The best place to look for housing is either on Airbnb, VRBO or FurnishedFinders.com; and of course, the team at Phoenix is happy to help look with you.

Now, if you’d like us to arrange housing, that can be easier, but comes with a financial cost. We can’t give you the housing expense reimbursement if you (the traveler) doesn’t actually pay for the housing (IRS gets a little mad), so while we’re happy to do it, it’s usually not in the best financial interest of the traveler. Therefore, we highly recommend asking us to help, but then finalizing the logistics personally.

Is credentialing hard?

Credentialing is going to suck any way you look at it, but I like to think we make it as easy as possible. Best way to get through it is to prepare early - get your shot records and licensures / CPRs in PDFs ready to email. We’ll send you into a local clinic to get anything else needed. We’ll get through it together!

Do you have weekly pay?

Yes, we pay on a weekly basis via Direct Deposit. Paystubs are available as soon as Thursday morning (prior to Friday payroll) for your review on the ADP Payroll app.

How does the 401K work?

Our 401K is pretty awesome! A lot of companies will delay 401K employer matches with vesting schedules, etc, but not Phoenix. You’re eligible for our full 5% employer match starting day 1. Just let us know during credentialing if that’s what you want to do.

What kind of benefits do you have?

Good ones! Check out our benefits resource guide for the full listing, but included are Medical, Dental (PPO, not an unusable HMO!), Vision, ST and LT Disability, Legal Services, Critical Illness and more!

How do I work best with my recruiter?

At Phoenix, the best way is always through honest communication and respect. We’re not one of those companies that hold a grudge if you take a staff position, but at the same time, we would like to know what’s going on so we don’t get blindsided. If you need help above and beyond just a paycheck, just ask. We work and make custom deals all the time. The more info we know, the more we can help.

Do you hire new graduates?

Unfortunately, we are not able to work with new graduates. Our clients (and Joint Commission!) expect candidates to have experience in the field so that they are able to hit the ground running.

What are “flex” hours?

Simply put, “flex” hours are the source of 95% of headaches in travel assignments. But the simple fact is, with the onset of VMS / MSP staffing programs, they are becoming an industry standard. “Flex” hours are when a lab is allowed to call off a shift or send someone home early.

Flex hour policies vary greatly. The average is 3 “flexes” per 13 week contract. The bad ones are one flex every pay period (two weeks). If an assignment has a heavy on call requirement and bad flex policy, watch out! But rest assured, we will make sure you know all the facts before signing.
